Chapter 29

My escape had been a surprise to the monster, because I bolted midsentence without a moment’s pause. He writhed on the ground as he tried to stand, but, as I suspected, his legs weren’t as skilled to get up from a slippery surface.

I made my way back home, following my tracks which I had left undisturbed in case I needed someone to come find me. Scytheson wouldn’t follow me into the city, not when all eyes would be upon their once noble Baron of Bode. The transformation was horrific and vile; it was clear the man inside was deeply ashamed of what had happened to him.

I suppose there was a thick irony in the fact that the Bodeans relied on dealing with demons in order to gain their power only to have their lineage resting on the back of the one man who hadn’t a clue of such dark matters. He was just of the opinion that his father was a cruel and arrogant noble, like most other men at the top.

Returning to the city of Bode wasn’t eventful and I was thankful for that. I’d been pushing myself so hard lately…what was I even doing out here? I hadn’t a moment to stop and breathe ever since I adopted Planth. In my prime I would have been easily able to avoid that lug within the trees, but the fatigue had just built up in my bones, slowing me down in the process.

A grim welcoming party was waiting for me at the gates, Silvia upon her horse, Chester beside her, arms crossed and the ever-ready-to-fight Jhook.

“I hope you have bad news,” I said. “Because that would make my news sound less bad than it really is.”

“The investigation was thorough,” Silvia said. Her voice carried a great deal of strain and I could see her hands were trembling as to hold the saddle before her. “I found the man’s records and they were as I had been able to determine from our letters. He was consorting with our friend the Carrion King. On top of that, he was attempting to purchase slaves from the Mushroom folk around here, for purposes unknown.”

“Hmmm, how much are they charging?”

“Iron,” Jhook said. “They want metals and that mine we found was full of it.”

“Moving on,” Silvia commanded, interrupting our patter. “And our wizard has spent the last two days studying exactly one spot here.” With that, she pointed towards a small alcove that looked to have been a shop of some kind.

The wizard was bent over…nothing. Books and tables were all around him, but he was absorbed by thin air. What could possibly be the situation? Perhaps he was fascinated or magically trapped?”

“Has he eaten?”

“Who cares? He has found a terrible thread in our present demiplane. There was something that was able to enter into this kingdom through illegitimate mystic channels. Upon doing so, it released a noxious corruption that would slowly infect the entire demiplane.”

“Our friend Mr. Carrion?” I asked.

“Most likely, but damn it all, Miles we are proper fucked here.
